Kwandale Exum Finds Endless Opportunities in Norfolk State University’s M.S. Microelectronics & Photonics Program

Kwandale Exum, M.S. Microelectronics & Photonics Program Graduate, 2018

As a full-time Service Engineer and dedicated father of three, Kwandale Exum knew that advancing his education would require a program offering both flexibility and academic rigor. “I initially graduated from Norfolk State University in 2018,” he shared. “The exceptional experience I had as an undergraduate student was the reason I chose to return to NSU to pursue my master’s in Electronics Engineering.”

For Kwandale, NSU’s online M.S. in Electronics Engineering program provided the perfect balance between career, family, and continued professional growth. “The program offered a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience,” he said. “I truly valued the guidance and mentorship of my advisor and professors. Their counsel helped shape my technical foundation and leadership approach.”

Even in a virtual learning environment, Kwandale found connection and collaboration. He formed strong bonds with two classmates who shared his drive for excellence. “We built a sense of camaraderie that made the online classroom feel like we were sitting together on campus,” he recalled. “To this day, we still collaborate and reflect on personal and professional growth.”

Before beginning the M.S. in Electronics and Photonics Engineering program, Kwandale led a team of four technicians in his engineering role. A key discussion with his director about the value of a graduate degree in microelectronics and photonics reinforced his decision to pursue advanced studies. “We talked about how earning a master’s degree could deepen my expertise and open new pathways for leadership,” he said.

That decision quickly paid off. After completing his degree, Kwandale earned a promotion to Service Engineer Coordinator, expanding his responsibilities and leadership scope. “My education at NSU equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to take on greater challenges,” he said. “It’s been rewarding to see how my growth as an engineer has translated into professional advancement.”

Kwandale graduated from NSU’s online M.S. in Engineering program in May 2025, marking a milestone in both his personal and professional journey. Reflecting on his experience, he describes his time at Norfolk State University as an invaluable investment for himself and his future.

“Earning my master’s from NSU strengthened not only my technical skills but also my belief in lifelong learning,” he shared. “It proved that with the right support and determination, you can balance work, family, and education — and succeed.” “Anywhere I go, I just want to be able to step into the room and have a huge impact. I credit NSU with helping me achieve that.”
